On November 5, 2020, our congregation lost one of its beloved founders as Allan Shenfield passed away. With his wife, Maxine, and a few others, meeting and praying in living rooms of homes in the area a few decades ago, they began what would eventually become the parish of St. Augustine’s – Parkland.
You can read Allan’s obituary here.
Allan was a dairy farmer all of his life, in addition to being a citizen in every definition of the word. In addition to his work with Edmonton Northlands, he contributed his time to the local ag society and many other civic organizations. The Spruce Grove building that originally housed the library and city hall was named the Shenfield Civic Centre in his honour.
In Googling his name and following the results, I have uncovered the following:
- Distinguished alumni of Lakeland College.
- An example of a drought-ravaged farmer in 2015.
- Award of Excellence inductee for the City of Spruce Grove.
- Alberta Recreation Volunteer Recognition Award 1981.
- Board of Governors – Edmonton Northlands.
Allan was also known by thousands of thankful Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, and Parkland County high school students as the host of dozens of “safe grad” events at his family’s Surrey View Farm, just north of Spruce Grove.
Allan will be remembered by our church family for his participation in many parish events, most notably hosting outdoor worship services and parish picnics each June and converting one of his barns into a worship space for our annual Christmas Pageant each December. He’ll also be infamously remembered as the man who would rise at the conclusion of each Annual General Meeting of the parish, moving for the meeting’s adjournment.
A funeral was conducted on Saturday, November 14 with Bishop Jane Alexander presiding.
